Preview: Bar Convent Berlin 2024
As Bar Convent Berlin returns to the German capital, we look at what is in store for visitors and exhibitors, and highlight the new products brands are planning to unveil at the prestigious annual event.
This month, the global spirits industry will flock to Berlin for Bar Convent Berlin (BCB) 2024. From 14 to 16 October, BCB will once again take over Messe Berlin, welcoming thousands of bartenders, buyers, spirits experts, and more. With more than 470 exhibitors and 16,000 visitors expected to be at the show, BCB 2024 promises to be the biggest on-trade event of the year.
During last year’s show, agave spirits took centre stage; this year’s Spirit of Honor will be whisky, showing a variety of regions and styles.
The BCB Whisk(e)y Embassy will feature a bar hotspot led by the Collab Bar team from Hamburg: Chloé Merz, Fredi Behrens, and Adelina Schefferski, who will demonstrate how to produce creative and modern whisky-based cocktails over the three days of the show.
As well as the bar, the BCB Whisk(e)y Embassy will feature an educational programme of workshops and discussions curated by Becky Paskin, founder of the OurWhisky Foundation.
“Whisky/whiskey fans and those who want to become one will definitely get their money’s worth at BCB this year,” explains Petra Lassahn, BCB’s director. “We have dedicated a hotspot in hall 11.1 to this style. It doesn’t matter whether the visitors are already familiar with the topic or are total beginners – everyone is welcome to learn more about this exciting spirit.”
Not just spirits
While cocktails and distilled expressions are the main focus of the show, there are plenty of opportunities to discover something new this year.
BCB will yet again shine a spotlight on the no-and-low movement, with the return of a dedicated bar for non-alcoholic and low-ABV cocktails. This year, the team from London’s Amaro Bar will take charge. Bar owner Elon Soddu says: “This bar hotspot at the trade fair is something completely different from a guest shift in a bar or a talk on a stage – so it’s a very exciting challenge for us.”
Exhibitors will have the chance to see their products transformed into innovative no-and-low drinks by the Amaro Bar team, offering visitors a chance to try products in new, unexpected ways.
And, for the first time in its history, BCB will explore the world of wine, with a dedicated area offering workshops and tastings curated by Kalk & Kegel magazine. A key focus of the area is exploring how bartenders can elevate their offerings by incorporating wine into their bar programmes.
“Wine offers great potential for bars,” explains Lassahn. “At times, guests might want to enjoy a good wine rather than a cocktail. But it is in the nature of being a bartender that their focus is often on spirits and they are not yet very familiar with this topic – and we want to change that. That’s why we decided to introduce our visitors to the world of wine and its diversity this year. There will be no classic exhibitors, but an education area, and the opportunity to taste and get to know different wines.
“Fortunately, we can do this together with the wine experts from Kalk & Kegel, and Johannes Schellhorn from Bar Freundschaft in Berlin, who curated the programme in this special area at the Palais.”
Education and seminars
On the main stage, there will be talks from Leo Robitscheck from the Nomad Group, Keith Motsi from Tokyo’s Virtù bar, and Jean Trinh of Colombia’s Alquímico. Alex Francis, formerly of Little Red Door in Paris, will explain the trials and tribulations of opening a new bar in one of the world’s premier markets.
Lassahn says: “Priyanka Blah and Yash Bhanage will be discussing the growth of India as a key hospitality market, which is a talk that I won’t miss out on.”
She adds: “The topic of wellbeing is also very important. Merly Kammerling from UK’s Well & Being agency will provide tips for successfully winding down after busy nights to help avoid physical and mental problems.”
Networking is, of course, a big part of the show, with Lassahn explaining that the Matchmaking tool will again be on hand to help exhibitors, bartenders and buyers arrange meetings on the upper floor of the Palais.
“A new concept is the BCB Workshop Stage, where there will be interactive workshops, as well as the Brand Stage, where exhibitors can offer their own education,” she adds.
This year, there will be no closing party for the show. “The reason is quite simple,” explains Lassahn. “Last year there were a lot of events in the city during BCB. We decided that we want to give our exhibitors the opportunity to communicate their evening events on our platforms, rather than organising our own guest shifts or parties to provide additional competition to the already very large range of events.
“We look forward to enjoying these special evenings as visitors.”

This year Broken Bones has won medals in four Global Spirits Masters Competitions, including a Master medal for its vodka, which was praised by the judges for its “sweet, floral smell with a touch of fruit, slight sweetness and creamy notes” and a “nice mouthfeel and good balance, displaying notes of orchard fruits on the slightly hot palate with a peppery finish”.
