Top spirits for TV and film fans

From whiskies inspired by period dramas to decanters designed to look like iconic blockbuster characters, there are a host of spirits out there aiming to grab the attention of film and TV fans around the world.

Film and TV has provided a wealth of inspiration for the world’s spirit makers

From a limited edition Johnnie Walker bottling released alongside sci-fi thriller Blade Runner 2049 to the launch of a cocktail menu featuring drinks inspired by the world of Star Wars, the drinks industry has always been quick to strengthen its ties to the small and silver screens.

Whether it’s imbibers drinking like their favourite film stars, distillers immersing themselves in pop culture, there’s no denying the worlds of spirits and cinema have become intertwined.

More recently, spirits makers have strived to build their association with the world’s biggest franchises off-screen through a series of specially designed drinks.

A number of new film- and TV-inspired spirits have hit the market recently, so SB has rounded up the top releases for film and TV buffs.

Silver Screen Bottling Company

Silver Screen Bottling Company has been making and marketing movie-inspired spirits for more than a year, and its range boasts products inspired by sci-fi series Star Trek and action-packed film John Wick.

The company’s latest release takes its influence from cult comedy Step Brothers, which starred Will Ferrell and John C Reilly. Prestige Worldwide Quality Vodka joins Silver Screen Bottling Company’s Montgomery Scott Blended Scotch and a Bourbon inspired by sci-fi blockbuster Predator.

Peaky Blinder Spirits

In 2017, craft brewery Sadler’s Ales launched a range of spirits inspired by BBC gangster series Peaky Blinders.

The Peaky Blinder Spirit range includes a “a bold, smooth and triple-distilled Irish whiskey”, a nod to the TV gang’s favourite spirit, and a spiced London Dry gin, which the brewery hopes “complements the famous Indian cuisine that is ever-present in the Black Country”.

Finally, Peaky Blinder Black Spiced Rum is said to be “modernised with essences of orange, nutmeg, vanilla and raisin”.

Each spirit is said to “celebrate traditional flavours from the 1920s”.

Stormtrooper Gin

Quirky online retailer Firebox added to its range of spirits with two gins bottled in decanters shaped like Stormtrooper helmets.

Exclusive to Firebox, the glass bottles are modelled on the stormtrooper helmets from the Star Wars film series. The original helmets were designed by Shepperton Studios, which created them for the first Star Wars film in 1977.

The officially-licensed bottle is available in two variants, one containing Bimber London Dry Gin and one with Bimber Sloe Gin.

Downton Abbey Spirits

After dominating the small screen for several years, period drama Downton Abbey is now filling cinemas across the country – but not before finding its way into your drinks cabinet.

Released ahead of the premiere of the Downton Abbey film, English distillery Harrogate Tipple created a new gin and blended whisky inspired by the popular drama.

Harrogate Tipple made its products with botanicals from the gardens and Victorian hothouse of the 750-year-old Ripley Castle estate, which is home to the distillery. Both expressions have an ABV of 43% and are made using Harrogate spring water.

Johnnie Walker A Song of Ice and A Song of Fire

After unveiling White Walker, the first collaboration between Johnnie Walker and HBO series Game of Thrones, Diageo has since unveiled a range of whiskies influenced by the hit series.

At the start of 2019, ahead of the release of the final season of Game of Thrones, Diageo teased its collection of eight whiskies, each matching one of the show’s Houses of Westeros – as well as the Night’s Watch. The world’s largest spirits producer has since expanded its range of themed whiskies with two further Johnnie Walker bottlings, which were influenced by House Stark and House Targaryen.
