Botran Rum owner Guatemalan Spirits Group has agreed to acquire Spanish flavoured gin brand Puerto de Indias from Miami-based HIG Capital for an undisclosed sum.

The transaction for 100% of the brand’s shares is expected to close by the end of January 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

Puerto de Indias will join Guatemalan Spirits Group’s portfolio, which includes Botran Rum, Venado Rum, Xibal Gin, Quezalteca, Trenzuda, Mizata Vodka, and Petrov Vodka. Guatemalan Spirits also owns a 50% stake in Zacapa Rum through a joint venture with Diageo, which distributes the brand.

The acquisition of Puerto de Indias will help Guatemalan Spirits Group strengthen its presence in Europe.

Douglas Franco, corporate CEO of Guatemalan Spirits Group, said: “This acquisition brings to life our long-term vision, through which we aim to consolidate our presence in markets of high strategic value.

“It reinforces our commitment to Spain and Europe as key markets for the company’s global growth and reaffirms our dedication to sustainable international expansion, supported by strong brands with a clear identity and growth potential.”

Launched in 2013 as the ‘world’s first’ fresh strawberry-flavoured gin, Puerto de Indias has since expanded its range to include a blackberry variant. Founded in Seville, the brand is described as a leading Spanish flavoured gin.

HIG Capital acquired a majority stake in the brand in 2018.

Under HIG’s ownership, the gin strengthened its brand positioning and expanded internationally. HIG also commissioned a new production facility for the brand in Carmona, Seville.

Borja de Parias, principal of HIG in Spain, stated: “During our time as shareholders, we worked to professionalise the organisation, prepare the company for international development with the support and capabilities of HIG, and consolidate the brand in the Spanish market, with the disruptive entry of its iconic strawberry gin, ultimately making it the undisputed leader in the flavoured gin segment.

“This entire process was made possible thanks to the close collaboration with the Puerto de Indias team, whose professionalism and commitment have been key in recent years.

“We are confident that Guatemalan Spirits Group is the ideal partner to lead the next phase of growth, enhance the organisation’s existing capabilities, and, together with the current management team, drive new development opportunities that Guatemalan Spirits Group will bring to the business.”
