Equity firm buys leading Spanish pink gin brand

Private investment firm H.I.G. Capital has acquired a majority stake in Puerto de Indias Group, producer of Spain’s leading pink gin.

Miami-based H.I.G. Capital will help to “accelerate” the Spanish company’s growth initiatives and support its expansion into global markets. Financial details of the deal were not provided.

Produced in Seville, Spain, Puerto de Indias was founded by Jose Antonio and Francisco Rodriguez Fernandez. According to the company, its namesake gin brand is the leading player in the pink gin market in Spain.

The distillery, based in Carmona, claims to be one of the oldest and most traditional distilleries in the province of Andalusia.

Puerto de Indias is available in three flavours: Strawberry, Pure Black Edition and Classic. The Strawberry expression is described as having a “sweet and wild aroma of strawberry and juniper”.

Pure Black Edition is inspired by the Andalusian spring, and combines “floral scents” with orange, lemon and orange blossom.Puerto de Indias Classic is described as a ”more intense and citrus” gin.

The distillery also produces Los Hermanos anis liqueur and Triunfo orange liqueur.

The firm is currently looking to establish a commercial network in Europe, the US, and Latin America, as well as “strategic alliances” with international distributors.

Antonio added: “This transaction will allow Puerto de Indias to have at its disposal the necessary resources to expand into the international market and complement our company’s capabilities to meet the challenges ahead.

“The shareholders and employees of Puerto de Indias are very enthusiastic about embarking on this new phase in partnership with H.I.G.”
