Second Soma bar opens in Canary Wharf
By Rupert HohwielerThree years since the launch of its first site in Soho, London speakeasy Soma has opened its second outpost in Canary Wharf.
The original Soma – located in Soho’s Denmark Street below Indian restaurant Kricket – launched in September 2021 by the same founding duo, Rik Campbell and Will Bowlby.
Much like in Soho, Canary Wharf’s Soma has accompanied the opening of a new Kricket and can be found adjacent to the restaurant, but concealed from street view.
The interior has been fitted with an industrial aesthetic, courtesy of design studio Cake Architecture.
The minimalist space features a main bar from where up to 50 guests can be seated. It also includes a lounge for private events with low tables and burnt orange sofas.
Meanwhile, exposed concrete walls are brightened by bespoke light fixtures that were inspired by the ‘vibrant hues’ of marigold markets, the flower markets in North India.
The cocktail menu has been developed by Kricket’s head of beverages, Will Rogers.
Rogers and the team focus on a ‘less is more philosophy’ and base each serve around a seasonal ingredient form the Indian subcontinent and its surrounding regions, backed by high-quality spirits.
For instance, the Chaat is made up of Tapatio Blanco, Mezcal Verde, chaat masala and gooseberry; the Raisin combines Butter Raisin Hapusa, Amontillado, jasmine and Champagne; and the Perilla brings together Aluna Coffee, clove, Fernet-Branca Menta and Perilla Tonic.
There are also two alcohol-free options on the menu: Samphire (samphire tea, Himalayan salt, ginger, and green chilli) and Cashew (cashew, orgeat, coriander seed and lapsang).
Soma Canary Wharf is open from Tuesday-Wednesday (5-11pm) and Thursday-Saturday (5pm-2am).
Earlier this year, the Soho site debuted a new menu, which was designed to reflect the change in seasons.
In terms of new bars, London has also recently welcomed Good Measure from the Daddy Bao team, while a second Cahoots from the Inception Group is nearing completion. However, the English capital lost Crossroads last week in a sudden closure.
