The Alan Lodge Young International Drinks Writer of the Year Award was launched in 2012 in memory of The Spirits Business’ late deputy editor, Alan Lodge.

Freelance whisky writer Schrieberg particularly impressed this year’s judges with his Forbes feature – Sexism in whisky: why you shouldn’t read the Whisky Bible.

The entries were judged virtually earlier this month. The judging panel comprised: Emily Harris, founder and director of May Fox Communications; Becky Paskin, spirits journalist, presenter and co-founder of Our Whisky; and Melita Kiely, editor of The Spirits Business.

Paskin noted the importance of hard-hitting journalism, such as Schrieberg’s Forbes feature on sexism in whisky, and the role this particular piece of work played in igniting a global movement to stamp out sexism in the industry.

“Felipe is not afraid to tackle difficult subjects but always manages to remain fair and balanced in his writing,” Paskin commented.

“I’m so pleased he is getting the recognition he deserves for breaking the story on sexism in whisky and in the Whisky Bible, as I think the magnitude of what this feature meant was probably overlooked last year.”

Harris echoed Paskin’s sentiment, and added: “Felipe truly deserves to win this year’s Alan Lodge Young International Spirits Writer of the Year Award. Through his writing he’s shown immense talent to tackle subjects with a thought-provoking angle, dealing with it head on, whilst maintaining a balanced viewpoint.

“His writing has also been instrumental in making the whisky industry sit up and listen, marking a huge step-change within the category and a re-evaluation of how brands and companies communicate. A massive congratulations to a much-deserved winner.”

Schrieberg was announced as the Alan Lodge Young International Drinks Writer of the Year 2021 during a ceremony in London yesterday (18 November), along with all the winners of The Spirits Business Awards 2021.

Schrieberg joins a prestigious list of past winners, including 2020 winner Susannah Skiver Barton.
