Motel Mezcal makes Australian debut

Artisanal Oaxacan brand Motel Mezcal has appointed family-owned Fesq & Company as its exclusive distributor in Australia.

Motel Mezcal is rapidly expanding its presence across the APAC region

The partnership is said to build on family values, bringing together Motel Mezcal, created by Daniel López, a third-generation mezcal-maker from Oaxaca, and Fesq & Company, led by the sixth generation of the Fesq family in Sydney.

Under the agreement, Fesq & Company is the exclusive importer and distributor for Motel Mezcal across Australia, with a focus on expanding the brand’s presence through premium hospitality and retail channels.

The brand is made from 100% Espadín agave using artisanal methods, including roasting the agave underground over volcanic stones, crushing with a horse-drawn tahona, fermenting in open-air wooden vats, and distilling in copper pots. It is owned in partnership with its producers.

On the palate, the mezcal delivers notes of herbaceous agave, ripe banana, pineapple, mild oak, and subtle smoke.

“This mezcal carries the soul of my family,” said López. “To hand it to a family like the Fesqs, who have protected their own craft for six generations, feels like passing it into safe hands.”

With history dating back more than 175 years, independent and family-owned Fesq & Company operates from the Waterview Wharf buildings in Balmain, Sydney.

Harriet Fesq, managing director of Fesq & Company, added: “Motel Mezcal was an easy addition to our growing spirits portfolio. Elegant, approachable liquid, exceptional branding, strong founder heritage and value where it counts. We’re proud to be bringing it to Australia.”

The distribution deal was facilitated by Henry Gordon, co-founder and CEO of Motel Mezcal. He stated: “From the first conversation, this felt less like signing a distributor and more like two families recognising something in each other. We didn’t want a logistics partner — we wanted custodians.”

The Australian debut is part of the brand’s continued expansion across the Asia Pacific (APAC) region.

Motel Mezcal is already available in six APAC markets: China, Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Malaysia, and Taiwan.

In May this year, the brand took its Mezcalito Mirage takeover series to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Auckland, New Zealand.
