Francis Hall cocktail bar opens in Alexandria

Hotel Heron in Virginia’s Old Town Alexandria will welcome a new bar called Francis Hall on 10 October.

Hotel Heron opened in June this year.

The new bar, which is just over the Potomac River from Washington DC, will be led by Betty Woodward, the hotel’s director of food and beverage. Mexico-born Woodward began her hospitality career at Oyamel restaurant in DC, followed by roles at Yotel and Savannah hotels.

Francis Hall is named after a historical local barkeep who worked at establishments including the Washington Tavern and City Hotel. The bar describes him as ‘the kind of guy who knew everyone’s name and face and welcomed new guests with warmth and a smile’.

It joins the hotel’s rooftop bar, Good Fortune, and restaurant, Kiln.

The bar will serve around 30 drinks, ranging from ‘approachable’ to ‘experiential’, with nods to Southern traditions and the mid-Atlantic region. Frank’s Punch features corn whiskey, mezcal, clementine and Suze liqueur, while a take on the Negroni sees the serve transformed into a frozen sorbet with mezcal, vermouth, citrus and chocolate, which is made table-side with liquid nitrogen.

The menu will also offer a Punch Bowl section and low ABV serves.
