Mijenta debuts Añejo Gran Reserva Tequila

Tequila brand Mijenta has released a limited edition añejo expression matured in four different casks in the US.

Mijenta Añejo Gran Reserva will be available to drinkers in the US

The new Mijenta Añejo Gran Reserva was aged for 18 months in a series of hand-selected casks.

Ana Maria Romero, maestra tequilera, said: “We developed a unique approach to create Mijenta Añejo Gran Reserva that makes it unlike any other aged Tequila.”

The añejo follows the release of Mijenta’s Blanco and Reposado expressions, which launched in September and December 2020 respectively. Former Bacardi CEO Mike Dolan is one of the founders of Mijenta.

Using the brand’s blanco as its base, the new Tequila is first matured in American white oak barrels before being transferred to French oak barrels. It then undergoes further ageing in acacia barrels, which adds a light herbal and citrus note, before finally maturing in cherry oak casks for two months.

Romero said the maturation in cherry oak, as opposed to traditional Sherry, enhances the fruity notes of the Tequila.

The resulting liquid has notes of cacao, butterscotch and tobacco on the nose, while the palate leads to hints of dried stone fruits and spices such as mace, anise and saffron. Additional flavours of caramelised cooked agave, vanilla and coffee come through on the palate.

The packaging design for the Tequila is inspired by the midnight blue sky in the Highlands of Arandas, Jalisco. All paper-related components (label and box) are made of agave waste.

Priced at US$199 per 750ml bottle, the Tequila is available to order in the US from shopmijenta.com and siptequila.com.

Mijenta Añejo Gran Reserva will be exclusively sold online for the first two months, after which it will be available from retailers in select states. The first release will be limited to 2,160 bottles.

Mijenta released its blanco expression in the UK last year and recently appointed a brand ambassador for the market.
