Mijenta releases reposado TequilaBy Nicola Carruthers
Tequila brand Mijenta has launched a limited edition reposado as its first line extension.
Launched in September 2020, Mijenta Tequila was founded by former Bacardi CEO Mike Dolan, Juan Coronado and Elise Som. It was created in collaboration with Mexico-based distiller Ana Maria Romero.
The new reposado joins the blanco bottling in the Mijenta range, which will be followed by additional expressions in the future, including an añejo by mid-2021 and a cristalino Tequila.
Mijenta Reposado was aged for up to six months in a combination of American white oak, French oak and French acacia casks. The Tequila is described as being a ‘more mature and fuller expression with a long finish’.
The nose offers notes of vanilla, bergamot, honey, preserved fruits and orange blossom flowers, while the palate has hints of cocoa nibs.
Only 6,500 bottles of the reposado were produced in the first batch.
“Mijenta deeply respects the terroir of the Jalisco highlands, which is why we have aspired to craft a Tequila that brings forth the region’s famous mineral-rich, red alkaline soil and unique fruity notes,” said Romero.
“Our vision is to allow for the cooked agave, its spices and aromas to continue to develop delicately by interacting with both the used American oak casks and the new French acacia and French oak casks.
“This process ensures that the aromas balance while the ageing brings forth soft and deep flavours with a powerful mouthfeel. Each element is carefully calibrated to obtain an aromatic palate and a silkiness that is entirely unique to Mijenta.”
The reposado Tequila is recommended served neat, over ice or mixed in a nightcap cocktail, such as an Old Fashioned. It also said to pair well with dry fruit, soft cheese, game meat and flavourful Asian dishes, or consumed alongside desserts with flavours of vanilla, coconut or semi-bitter chocolate.
Mijenta Reposado is available in the US from Reserve Bar or from retailers in select states, priced at US$69.
