Top 10 spirits launches in September 2019

September saw a host of new products enter the market, including a Tequila from former basketball player Michael Jordan, a 23-year-old single malt from Glenfiddich and a vodka made with beef bones.

September was a busy month for higher-age bottlings as rum brand Flor de Caña, Tequila brand Patrón and single malt Scotch The Singleton released their oldest expressions to date.

Meanwhile, Rémy Martin released its first permanent line extension in nine years, and Freddie Noe unveiled the latest instalment in his Little Book series.

Tequila also witnessed a boom in celebrity-backed brands with ex-basketball player Michael Jordan moving into the category with his Cincoro brand.

Cincoro Tequila

Former basketball star Michael Jordan became the latest celebrity to move into Tequila last month.

Jordan partnered with Jeanie Buss of the Los Angeles Lakers, Wes Edens of the Milwaukee Bucks, and Emilia Fazzalari and Wyc Grousbeck of the Boston Celtics to develop the new brand.

Distilled from 100% blue weber agave, Cincoro Tequila will launch blanco, reposado, añejo and extra añejo expressions. It will be rolled out worldwide in 2020.

Tercet

Tercet will be the first permanent expression to join the Rémy Martin range since the launch of Rémy Martin 1898 in 2010.

The expression is the result of a collaboration between Rémy Martin cellar master Baptiste Loiseau, Rémy Martin master distiller Jean-Marie Bernard and wine master Francis Nadeau.

Tercet is available to buy in the US and will also be released in China in small quantities.

Glenfiddich Grand Cru

Created to tap into “celebratory moments”, Glenfiddich Grand Cru is first aged in American and European oak casks before being “further bolstered with extra intensity” from cuvée casks from the Champagne region.

The single malt is the first release in the new Grand range. The next whisky in the series will launch in late 2020.

Bottle at 40% abv, the Glenfiddich Grand Cru has notes of apple blossom, freshly baked bread and candied lemon on the nose. The palate has hints of rich vanilla oak, sweet brioche, sandalwood, pear sorbet and white grape.

Flor de Caña V Generaciones

Last month saw the launch of Flor de Caña’s oldest expression to date, a limited edition 30-year-old called V Generaciones.

The rum been aged in a single barrel since 1988 and was released ahead of the Nicaraguan brand’s 130th anniversary in 2020. 

V Generaciones celebrates the thousands of workers and five generations of family members behind the brand since 1890.

Patrón Extra Añejo 10 Años

This new expression is the oldest release from Bacardi-owned ultra-premium Tequila brand Patrón.

The limited edition Tequila was aged in a blend of American oak and hybrid American and French Limousin barrels.

Made using 100% blue weber agave from the fields of Atotonilco, Mexico, Patrón Extra Añejo 10 Años is said to have “a remarkable balance between agave notes and unique flavour characteristics”.

Doom Bone Vodka

One of the more unusual expressions to launch last month was Doom Bone Vodka, which is made with beef bones.

Rebel Distillers, founded last year by London Distillery Company’s Matt McGivern and Dylan Bell, teamed up with publisher Bethesda Softworks to create Europe’s first spirit designed for a blockbuster video game.

Doom Bone Vodka was launched to mark the release of the Doom Eternal video game later this year.

Little Book Chapter 3

The third release in eighth generation Beam distiller Freddie Noe’s Little Book series honours Noe’s “storied family roots in Kentucky”.

The limited edition blend comprises: nine-year-old Knob Creek and Basil Hayden’s Bourbons, an 11-year-old Booker’s Bourbon and a 12-year-old Baker’s Bourbon.

The expression was launched following “high acclaim” for the first two whiskeys in the series – Noe Simple Task, which launched in September 2019, and The Easy, which debuted in September 2017.

Black Tot

Spirits producer Elixir Distillers unveiled a new expression last month, which combines four styles of pot and column still rums from Guyana, Barbados and Jamaica.

Black Tot has been matured in ex-Bourbon barrels and aged solely in the Caribbean.

Created by Elixir Distillers rum maker Oliver Chilton, Black Tot is said to have flavours of tropical fruits, Caribbean cakes and “intense” espresso, leading to sweet spices on the finish.

Ki No Jyu

Ki No Jyu Kyoto Gin Series 1 Gyokuro from Japan’s Kyoto Distillery is the first expression in the new Kyoto Gin Series.

The distillery has collaborated with Horii Shichimeien, a tea farmer in Uji, Kyoto, to create the new expression.

Bottled at 47% ABV for “maximum intensity”, Ki No Jyu has notes of rich green tea and fresh citrus.

The Singleton 53 Year Old

Another brand to release its oldest bottling to date last month was Diageo-owned Scotch brand The Singleton.

Aged for 53 years, the 40.5% ABV single malt has been drawn from a single hogshead cask.

Only 117 bottles have been released at an RRP of £26,400 each (approximately US$33,000).
