Emperador profits rise 11% in 2016

Philippines-based drinks group Emperador recorded a net income of PHP 7.7 billion (US$153.5m) last year, driven by high-margin brandy and whisky products.

The owner of Scotch whisky brand Whyte and Mackay, Emperador is also the world’s largest brandy company and owns a stable of Spanish brandy and sherry brands through Bodegas Fundador, which it acquired from Beam Suntory in December 2015.

The group reported 11% profit growth for 2016, achieved on consolidated revenues of PHP 41 billion (US$817.3m).

Margins were higher in comparison to 2015, the group said, due to cost efficiency, which enabled it to record higher earnings.

Emperador president, Winston Co, said: “Driven by high-margin brandy and whisky products, we have been able to sustain our earnings growth. Our earnings growth per annum from 2011 to 2016 is 27%.
“We also managed to realise our highest quarterly earnings in the fourth quarter of 2016, amounting to almost PHP 2.8 billion (US$55.8m) and reflecting an increase of 23% over the fourth quarter of 2015.”

At the beginning of Q1 2017, the group announced that premium beverage importers and distributors GK Skaggs would sell Emperador Brandy and Emperador Light in major US markets going forward.

Co added: “With market penetration in 51 countries today, Emperador Brandy has evolved into a global brand. We believe that our export business will grow over time. And with the acquisition of Fundador last year, our brandy business is stronger than ever before.”
