Big Bottom Distilling launches oak-aged vodka

Big Bottom Distilling has launched an oak-aged vodka as part of a collaboration with two other Oregon-based distillers.

Big Bottom Distilling, Bull Run Distilling and Indio Spirits and Distillery have teamed up to create traditioanl oak-aged Starka vodkas

Working with Bull Run Distilling and Indio Spirits and Distillery, Big Bottom has launched its Starka Vodka as part of the collaborative Oregon Starka Project.

The initiative sees the three distillers market their individual, traditional oak-aged vodkas, known as Starka, together.

Each distiller has created an exclusive variation of Starka by choosing specific barrels that are distinct to each producer.

“Oregon distillers don’t see each other as competition,” said Ted Pappas, owner of Big Bottom Distilling. “There’s a real sense of support amongst each other and each other’s products. It’s about promoting ‘Brand Oregon’.”

Dating back to 15th century Eastern Europe, Starka is a traditional type of aged vodka created to celebrate the birth of a child.

According to custom, the father of the child would pour large amounts of homemade spirits into a empty oak wine barrel and bury it into the ground, digging the cask back up only on the day of his child’s wedding.

Last month, Big Bottom Distilling expanded its range of American whiskeys finished in Port casks with the launch of Barlow Trail.
