Southern Glazer’s opens South Carolina distribution centre
By Rupert HohwielerThe opening of the state-of-the-art facility represents a major investment by Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits (SGWS) in the US state.

The site is located on 4358 12th St. Extension in West Columbia on an 85-acre campus.
It features a 412,500-square-foot warehouse with office spaces, and room to expand a further 300,000 square feet to support the distributor’s long-term growth in the state.
“This new facility represents a major investment in Southern Glazer’s future in South Carolina,” said Steve Baker, executive vice-president, general manager, South Carolina, Southern Glazer’s Beverage Company.
“It was purpose-built to enhance service for our customers, support our supplier partners and create an efficient, modern workplace for our team members, while positioning our business for continued growth across the state.”
The facility will help to grow Southern Glazer’s supply chain network and improve service capabilities for both customers and suppliers across South Carolina.
The site has storage capacity for roughly 1.39 million cases of alcohol.
It is fitted with 13 receiving dock positions, 22 shipping dock positions, parking for 279 vehicles and capacity for 108 trailers.
Other features include two multi-level pick modules with a combined capacity of 75,000 cases, four dual-purpose palletisers that can each process 800 cases per hour, dedicated bottle and cold rooms, and additional infrastructure “designed to optimise workflow, accuracy and order fulfilment”.
Southern Glazer’s is the US’s largest alcohol distributor and operates in 47 US markets and Canada.
Last year, the company’s senior vice-president of commercial intelligence, Zachary Poelma, was a guest on The Spirits Business Podcast and spoke in detail about data insights into distribution in the US.
