By Annie HayesAmerican whiskey distiller WhistlePig has added a new permanent bottling to its range – a rye whiskey aged in three different types of wine casks.
WhistlePig Old World Rye is a blend of three different wine cask-finished whiskeysThe bottling joins the wine cask Old World range, which includes the world’s first Sauternes cask-finished rye, a Madeira cask and Port cask finished expression, all launched in limited quantities earlier this year.
All three 12-year-old whiskeys have been married together to create the new permanent Old World Rye, which has a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley.
It is made up of 30% Sauternes, 63% Madeira and 7% Port cask whiskeys.
“WhistlePig’s Old World delivers an exquisite balance of flavours through its unprecedented aging process and careful finishing in the highest quality wine casks,” said WhistlePig founder and CEO Raj Peter Bhakta. “This new release is the culmination of years of innovation at WhistlePig.”
WhistlePig said the new offering has an aroma of caramel, vanilla and winter fruit, with a flavour of rye spice, apricots, plums, raisins, dates and honey.
