Gin palace awarded National Heritage status

A gin palace in Ilford has made Historic England’s top 10 list of unusual places to receive National Heritage status this year.

The Grade II listed building was built in the 1900s

The government building body has published highlights of the 510 sites recognised this year, and rated the Victorian gin palace in The Cauliflower Hotel in its top 10 unusual sites awarded the accolade.

The Grade II listed building was built in the 1900s, and has been carefully preserved by owner Reiss Matto.

Matto told the Ilford Recorder: “It feels amazing because it’s like this building hasn’t been recognised and it’s nice that it’s being featured – there’s not a lot of buildings around Ilford like it.

“It’s amazing being listed because I know that it will be preserved for many years to come – all the work we’ve done here will be protected.”

Traces of a Neolithic henge in Yorkshire, a pebble pavement, and the gravestone of the leader of the band that played on the Titanic as it sank are among the list of new sites.
Earlier this year the abandoned office of a weekly newspaper in North Yorkshire was transformed into a cocktail bar.
