Three workers became trapped in the Strathmill Distillery after it became floodedAs reported in The Scotsman, two men and one woman became trapped after the nearby River Isla burst its banks and flooded the distillery.
Firefighters and a water rescue team were called to the scene and helped the workers onto a boat, leading them to safety two hours after they initially became trapped.
The river flooded following a prolonged period of high winds and torrential rain, however no one was injured during the incident.
A Diageo spokesperson said: “The emergency services were called and they responded rapidly to help evacuate the people concerned. We would like to thank the emergency services for their assistance.
“The flood water has now receded and the distillery is being cleaned and the impact of the water assessed.”
The Strathmill Distillery, which was founded in 1823, was acquired by Grand Metropolitan in 1972, later becoming part of Diageo in 1997.
While the majority of whisky created at the distillery is used in Diageo’s blends, the group revealed a rare 25-year-old single malt from the distillery as part of its Special Releases range.
