Driver in fatal ‘Dr Vodka’ crash was ‘over limit’

A Lamborghini driver who crashed his car at high-speed last week, killing vodka entrepreneur Malcolm Lloyd, was found to be more than two times over the drink drive limit.

Police have charged Andres Esteban Toro with DUI manslaughter after he was found to be over the legal limit when he crashed his Lamborghini at more than 100mph, killing ‘Dr Vodka’ Malcolm Lloyd (pictured)

Andres Esteban Toro smashed into the back of a stationary SUV while driving at more than 100 miles an hour near Miami Beach on 24 April, killing his passenger Lloyd, founder of the Double Cross Vodka brand who was known as ‘Dr Vodka’.

Toro was initially charged with vehicular homicide, but, according to the Miami Herald, now faces the additional charge of DUI manslaughter after toxicology reports found he was more than two times over the legal limit.

Both Toro, 53, and the SUV driver, identified as personal trainer Raul Alfonzo, are in critical condition in hospital. He therefore faces another charge of DUI serious bodily injury.

A Miami judge ordered that Toro post a larger US$150,000 bond in light of the additional charges.

Toro, who is facing an additional five years in prison in light of the charges, lives in a multi-million dollar Coconut Grove condo, and owns an Aston Martin, a Mercedez-Benz and a Range Rover.

Police say he was driving at 120 miles an hour in a 50 miles an hour zone when the crashed happened.

Lloyd, 42, otherwise known as “Dr Vodka”, founded super-premium Double Cross Vodka in 2008 after giving up a career in medicine.

He received a degree in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins and a medical doctorate from Dartmouth Medical School, but later joined the spirits industry in 2005 when he founded Old Nassau Imports with his godfather.

In a statement, the company said: “All of us at Old Nassau Imports are heartbroken over the loss our friend and leader.”
