Diageo unveils Cardhu Amber Rock Speyside whisky
By Melita KielyDiageo’s Cardhu single malt Scotch whisky has added a new expression to its range of Speyside whiskies called Cardhu Amber Rock.
Diageo has released a new Speyside whisky called Cardhu Amber RockDouble matured in toasted American oak casks, the new no-age-statement release is described as tasting of citrus and honey with fruit, spice, sweetness and fresh vanilla.
The name Cardhu Amber Rock refers to the Gaelic translation of the brand’s name, which means “black rock” and was chosen to highlight the expression’s “golden, jewel-like” colour.
The new addition follows the recent releases of Cardhu 15-year-old and Cardhu 18-year-old expressions.
“The Bourbon nuances that develop from the second maturation in toasted casks seasoned with Bourbon whiskey add an even greater silkiness and roundness to the already balanced and delicious Cardhu, bringing vanilla and spice notes along with hints of oak. We are very pleased with how this has turned out,” said Dr Matthew Crow, master blender who worked on Cardhu Amber Rock.
While its main line of distribution will be through whisky specialist stores, Cardhu Amber Rock will be available in France and Belgium from spring 2014, before being rolled out across Western Europe – including UK, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Greece and the Netherlands – later this summer.
“Western Europe remains a major market for our single malts, including Cardhu”, commented Nik Keane, Diageo’s global brand director for malt whiskies. “We are excited and confident that this very original new variant will appeal both to existing Cardhu drinkers and to whisky drinkers new to the category or the brand.”
Bottled at 40% abv, Cardhu Amber Rock will carry an RRP of £41.
