Proper No. Twelve unveils charred barrel Black Reserve
By Miona MadsenProximo Spirits-owned Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey has introduced a blend finished in heavily charred American oak barrels.

The new Black Reserve is a blend of single malt and grain whiskeys, aged for a minimum of four years in first- and second-fill American oak casks and finished in heavily charred ex-Bourbon barrels.
The use of heavily charred barrels is said to intensify the expression’s bold Bourbon flavours, with rich caramel, toasted wood, soft vanilla, and sweeter notes.
Lander Otegui, executive vice president of marketing and innovation at Proximo Spirits, said: “We want Black Reserve to reinforce what Proper No. Twelve has been about from the start: expert craftsmanship, approachability and more than 400 years of whiskey production and blending expertise.
“The toasted wood and heartier caramel notes from the heavily charred barrels, balanced by the gentle vanilla sweetness, are a great testament to that.”
The new addition to the brand’s range is bottled at 40% ABV and can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in a signature cocktail such as Proper Black Honey Old Fashioned.
Proper No. Twelve Black Reserve is now available across the US, with an average suggested retail price of US$32.99.
Proper No. Twelve is a blended whiskey triple-distilled at the Bushmills Distillery. It was launched in 2018 by UFC fighter Conor McGregor and acquired in 2021 by Proximo Spirits, the owner of Jose Cuervo and Bushmills, for US$600 million.
The brand has since extended its range with an apple-flavoured whiskey in 2023.
Last year, Proper No. Twelve released its first single malt, aged 13 years in first-fill American oak Bourbon casks and second-fill European oak ruby Port casks.
