LadyDragón Tequila
If you’re looking to add more female-founded spirits to your repertoire, take a look at Ladydragón Tequila. The brand burst onto the scene in October 2024, founded by JC Cortez and Heather Ann. Its name honours the Chinese zodiac sign of the dragon, aligning with the year founder Cortez was born.
The small batch brand is made from 100% pure agave in Amatitán, Jalisco, Mexico. Ladydragón’s flagship expression is its blanco Tequila, bottled at 38% ABV. Tasting notes include sweet roasted agave, fresh citrus and florals, with herbal and earthy agave flavours for added complexity.
Priced at RRP US$87 a bottle, try the brand’s signature serve: Ladydragón with soda water and a squeeze of lime, and a Maraschino cherry or red rose petal for garnish.
Mijenta Maestra Selection
In September last year, Mijenta kicked off a new series exploring agave seeds with the launch of Mijenta Maestra Selection No 1.
Sitting at a higher ABV of 50%, the Tequila was crafted by Mijenta’s maestra tequilera, Ana María Romero, who aimed to innovate in ways previously unseen in the category.
Maestra Selection No 1 is made from 100% Agave de Semilla, or seed agave. For the majority of the time, agave is harvested from plant clones, or hijuelos. However, working with seed agave means an extra two years of waiting, as naturally pollinated seeds are taken to a nursery to grow before being replanted in the fields.
The result is a Tequila said to be rich with tropical fruits, dulce de leche, cinnamon and cardamom. It retails for RRP US$100.
Komos Reposado Cristalino
Cristalino Tequilas have been making inroads in recent years and last summer, Komos Reposado Cristalino added to the intrigue. The ultra-premium Tequila is made from 100% Blue Weber agave, hand-harvested from the highlands and lowlands of Jalisco in Mexico, and spends six months resting in French oak barrels that previously held red and white wine.
Its clear colour from the charcoal filtration that takes place post-maturation, which is said to remove impurities and create a smooth, crystal-clear liquid. The final stage before bottling is aeration, which is said to create a softer and smoother mouthfeel and add richness and roundness to the palate. Tasting notes include roasted agave aromas, and smoky minerality, hints of French oak and nuttiness on the palate.
Presented in a ceramic bottle handmade by artisans in Mexico and designed to be upcycled, Komos Reposado Cristalino is priced at RRP US$130 per bottle.
El Tequileño Still Strength
Last summer, El Tequileño added to its portfolio with the launch of a still-strength bottling. The Tequila comes straight from the still at 50% ABV, with no added water – just Tequila in its most authentic form. It benefits from traditional techniques, crafted from the brand’s founder, Don Jorge Salles Cuervo, 65 years ago.
Made from 100% Blue Weber agave, El Tequileño Still Strength boasts aromas of cooked agave, roasted fig, and orange zest, leading to lemon peel and white pepper spice when sipped.
Designed to be enjoyed on the rocks or mixed in a cocktail, the Tequila retails for RRP US$64.99.
Espolòn Flor de Oro
Inspired by Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), Espolòn Tequila created Flor de Oro, which translates into English as ‘golden flower’. The name is a nod to the marigolds that adorn traditional ofrendas during the Mexican celebration, honoured further by the infusion of natural marigold flower extracts into the reposado Tequila.
The Tequila was aged for two months in new oak barrels, and offers floral and citrus aromas, with fruit-forward notes from the oak.
Clocking in at 40% ABV, the Tequila retails for RRP US$44.
Cortada Smoked Tequila
Have you had a smoky Tequila before? Don’t knock it ‘til you try it.
If there’s a producer we’d trust with putting a smoky twist on the liquid, it’s Luxco, which debuted Cortada in June this year.
Created by fourth-generation master distiller Graciela ‘Grace’ Gonzalez, Cortada is made in Lost Altos, in the valley of Jalisco, from 100% state-grown Blue Weber agave. After cooking, the agave is smoked using mesquite and Mexican oak, which gives the Tequila its smoky character.
The range comprises a blanco, which retails for US$49.99, and a reposado, priced at US$ 54.99. Both Tequilas sit at 40% ABV.
Dobel Francisco Toledo Edition
In April this year, Proximo Spirits debuted a new Tequila range with the launch of a mezcal barrel-finished expression – which it believes is a first for the category.
The Francisco Toledo Edition was the inaugural release from the brand’s premium extra añejo range, designed to bring together two Mexican art forms: Tequila production and contemporary art.
The Tequila was aged for a minimum of three years in new oak barrels before being finished for a minimum of four months in American oak mezcal casks. The result is a liquid brimming with flavours of mezcal smoke, dried fruit, cooked agave, toasted nuts and vanilla.
It is expensive at US$5,000, given it’s a limited run of 281 bottles, but if you can find a bottle to sample, you’ll be among a lucky, select few.
Ocho x Old Fitzgerald
Tequila brand Ocho recently used ex-Old Fitzgerald Bourbon barrels to age its Tequila and released the results earlier this year.
The first of two vintages was made from agave harvested from the clay-like soil and low-altitude in Rancho Corralillos. The second was made from agave grown at Rancho Potrero Grande. Both fields are overseen by the Camerena family and have microclimates that are said to give the agave nuanced flavours.
The Tequilas spend 12 months in barrels from the Old Fitzgerald Bourbon 10 Years Old Spring Decanter Series. Both are bottled at 48% ABV and retail for US$110.
Don Londres
Don Londres Tequila made its UK debut at the end of last year, but fans have been enjoying this Tequila in the US for longer. The brand is the brainchild of music entrepreneur Dre London, known for managing international star Post Malone, and British rapper Blade Brown.
The pair partnered with master distiller Francisco González, whose family has been crafting premium Tequila since 1905.
Fans can explore two variants: Don Londres Blanco, which retails for around US$75, and Don Londres Reposado, priced at RRP US$95. Both Tequilas sit at 40% ABV.
Cazcabel Margarita Glass Gift Pack
If sustainability is high on your priority list, Cazcabel created an eco-friendly glass pack in December. The independent brand teamed up with Mexican artisan collective Someone Somewhere to create the hand-blown, recycled glassware to accompany its blanco Tequila. Crafted by Tekiti, the glasses are forged from recycled glass by Tekiti in Guadalajara, Jalisco.
Packs comprising two tumblers and a bottle of Cazcabel Blanco Tequila retail for around US$65.
