Kavalan bottles single cask for Austrian market
Austrian arm of distributor Salud Spirits has released a limited edition Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique expression exclusively for the Austrian market.
The whisky, which has been fully matured in a single American oak barrel that previously held red and white wine, is considered one of the best-selling expressions from the Taiwanese distillery.
According to Maria Kitsati, country director of Salud Spirits Austria, the expression’s popularity led Salud to choose the single cask: “What you see is that even though you take the same vinho barrique products from a dedicated single cask, the tasting notes and experience can be completely different from the ‘standard item’, which makes it so interesting to bottle single casks.”
The limited release is said to display aromas of chocolate, cherry and wood spice, followed on the palate by allspice and chocolate brownie notes with hints of liquorice, honey and raisins.
Salud recommends enjoying the single malt with a couple of drops of water to find ‘the sweet spot’.
Bottled at 56.3% ABV with an outturn of only 165 bottles, the single cask expression is presented in a blue design with the distributor’s name displayed on the bottle and gift box.
Kavalan’s Solist range allows the brand to ‘show off’ how well its whisky matures in a variety of casks.
The first bottles of the release will be handed over to the Taiwanese embassy in Vienna, with which Salud is said to have close ties.
Last month, Salud Spirits released a 12-year-old Loch Lomond whisky, aged in a Madeira hogshead cask, for the Austrian market.
This year, Kavalan celebrated its parent company King Car Group’s 45th anniversary with a special edition whisky aged in Palo Cortado casks.
In August, The Spirits Business interviewed Kavalan’s CEO, Y.T. Lee, to discuss the distillery’s almost 20-year journey.
