Indri whisky gains Tesco listing

Indian single malt whisky brand Indri has secured a listing in Tesco stores across England.

Indri Single Malt
Indri Trini is now available in 79 Tesco stores in England

Indri Trininon chill-filtered single malt, will be available in 79 Tesco stores.

Tesco’s decision to list Indri is said to reflect its commitment to offering a diverse range of products that appeal to an increasingly varied demographic of shoppers.

Helen Barugh, channel director of grocery at Mangrove Global, commented: “The buying team at Tesco are championing a truly diverse whisky range and one that features premium varieties and isn’t just driven by price. This directly responds to what we know consumers want: better quality spirits, new varieties to try, and a good selection of world whiskies at the heart of that.”

The whiskies are produced in the village of Indri, Haryana in India, by Piccadily Distilleries. The distillery houses six Scottish-style copper pot stills made in India, and the production process is described as ‘distinctly Indian’.

The grain, six-row barley, is grown locally and has been cultivated in the area of Rajasthan for thousands of years. It differs from the grains traditionally used in Europe, offering a richer flavour. The sub-tropical climate of the region plays a crucial role, accelerating evaporation which matures the whisky faster and results in ‘deeper, more complex flavours’.

Indri Trini is aged in three different casks, a ‘three wood marriage’ of ex-Bourbon, French wine, and PX Sherry casks, which imparts a fruity, sweet, and nutty flavour profile.

The Indian single malt joined Mangrove’s portfolio in June 2024.

Siddhartha Sharma, promoter at Piccadily Distilleries, said of the brand’s Tesco listing: “This strategic entry represents a significant leap forward for Indri and reflects the growing global demand for the brand.

“Partnering with Mangrove Global has been a key factor in our success, and we are excited to continue expanding Indri’s presence. Our presence at Tesco not only allows us to reach more whisky enthusiasts but also aligns with our vision of sharing the authentic taste and heritage of Indian whisky with the world.”

Mangrove’s role as a distributor is to introduce its portfolio of spirits, including Indri, to as many new consumers as possible, a goal helped by securing a national listing with one of the UK’s largest supermarkets.

Stef Holt, curator of Mangrove’s world whisky portfolio, shared: “If we look at global drinking trends, Indian whisky is anything but niche. It’s much beloved domestically and is now winning over whisky enthusiasts worldwide.

“This latest listing of Indri’s Trini shows that Tesco is listening to its customers, responding to what they want, and advocating for quality world whisky on supermarket shelves.”

Indri’s flagship expression Trini is now available in select Tesco stores with a suggested retail price of £45 (US$59).
