TBWC crowns cocktail champion

A bartender at Nottingham’s Tilt Bar, Callum Palmer, has won That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s (TBWC) cocktail competition.

Held at Couch Stirchley, a cocktail bar in Birmingham, Turner held off four other finalists to win the contest.

Named Boutique-y Vs The World, the competition pitted industry professionals against amateur and at-home mixologists.

Entrants had to use TBWC’s eight-year-old Canadian Corn Core Whisky to create a cocktail with five ingredients – each of which needed to be inspired by the five letters in ‘Moose’, which is printed on the whisky’s label.

Palmers took home the top spot with his serve, ‘Comrades Stick Together’.

He said: “The inspiration for the cocktail came from sticky toffee pudding and its roots to the import of British and Canadian history.

“I wanted to showcase all of the amazing notes within the whisky and how we can elevate the drinking experience of cocktails using this ingredient. The toffee ice cream flavours in whisky being a direct flavour link inside the cocktail boosted the flavour I needed.

“Following up, sherried berries added a deep complexity. The addition of the egg is to amplify the flavours and richness of the cocktail, making sure to have a silky mouthfeel to help round out that punchy 45.8% ABV whisky but also carry through the flavours we expect from sticky toffee pudding.”

The judging panel consisted of Katie Rouse, founder of Couch; Dave Worthington, whisky ambassador for Master of Malt; Stefan Turner, partner manager at Maverick Drinks; and Adrian Lugg, head of marketing at Atom Brands.

Along with the taste of Palmer’s cocktail, the judges were also impressed by its creativity and presentation.

As his prize, Palmer will now bottle his own whisky with Sam Simmons, Atom Brands’ head of whisky, and choose the cask and label design. The whisky will be available to purchase from Master of Malt.

Other finalists included three bartenders from Birmingham – George Bryan from the Fox & Chance; Junjun Xiang from The Mayan, and Michael Waller from Mooncat – and David Marklew and Debbie Burgess from The Inn At Home, in Newbury, Berkshire.

TBWC is owned by Atom Brands.

Last year, it was awarded Best Independent Bottler at the 2023 Spirit Business Awards, where Simmons also won Blender of the Year.
