SB Podcast: exploring Peru with Sastrería Martinez

How much do you know about Peru’s hospitality scene? We chat to Sastrería Martinez founder Diego Macedo on The SB Podcast to discover more.

Delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Macedo and his team opened Sastrería Martinez in May 2022.

A viral TikTok video put the Lima-based speakeasy well and truly on the cocktail map.

“That TikTok was so crazy, more than one million views and a lot of people started to come, and we started [thinking] like, ‘wow, what is happening here?’,” Macedo said. “We ran out of reservations for three months. A lot of friends and family called us and [were] asking us for a seat and we were like, we don’t have a seat.”

The cocktail menu is focused on celebrating local Peruvian ingredients and flavours, served alongside Peruvian dishes and, at times, live music.

The theatre of Sastrería Martinez was inspired by Macedo’s passion for the arts, and links back to his first passion before hospitality: acting.

Macedo delves into attending the same drama school as Hollywood couple Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, and his time as an understudy in The Lion King.
