Broken Bones Whisky sees demand grow

Slovenian distillery Broken Bones has already sold 80% of its 2024 whisky stock allocation.

Head distiller Boštjan Marušič, CEO Borut Osojnik, and sales and marketing director Polona Preskar co-founded Broken Bones in 2012.

The distillery has been creating whisky and gin, and this year branched out into brandy and vodka.

Creating the whisky took five years. The producer selected both peated and unpeated malt, local and foreign yeast, and experimented with fermentation lengths, distilling processes and cask types to create the distillery’s flavour profile. The equipment was hand-made by the co-founders, Preskar explained.

Post-distillation, the new make spirit is filled into new, specially treated, charred barrels, made from Slovenian wood. Once the team is satisfied the liquid has picked up the desired fruity notes and sufficient tannins, the liquid is transferred into ex-Bourbon barrels, where it remains until it is ready for bottling.

As demand grows, Broken Bones has almost completed selling its 2024 whisky stock – and is now gearing up to agree orders for 2025.

Earlier this year, Broken Bones unveiled its first bottling of 2024: Broken Bones Single Malt Whisky.

Aged for three years before being bottled at 46% ABV, the single malt was matured in Slovenian and American oak barrels.

It contains no added colouring and has not been chill filtered. Its taste profile is described as distinctive, floral and full of flavour.

Furthermore, this month (May) production started on the distillery’s new, scaled-up equipment. The producer hopes it will be producing 20,000 bottles of whisky per year by 2027.

Broken Bones is currently offering a few barrels of new make spirit, created on the new equipment, which can be ordered by emailing info@brokenbones.si.
