Lixir gains B Corp status

Newcastle-based Lixir has become the UK’s first B Corp-certified premium tonic and mixer brand.

The mixer brand said the development is testament to its ‘core mission for sustainability’.

Lixir Drinks received the certification from non-profit organisation B Lab, which accredits companies with B Corp status after they meet or exceed the B Impact Assessment criteria.

The criteria measures a firm’s social impact across categories. These requirements include corporate governance, the environment, community, employees and customers.

The brand was founded by bartending duo Matt Mahatme and Jordan Palmer in 2018.

In a joint statement, the founders said: “We are so proud that we can now say we have reached one of the biggest goals in our sustainability mission that we set out to achieve this year, and to also now be a part of a force for good.”

Lixir was recognised by B Lab for being certified carbon neutral in 2021, and for its partnership with Just a Drop, a charity helping bring clean and safe water and sanitation solutions to communities worldwide.

With every single case of Lixir purchased, 100 litres of clean water is donated.

Chris Turner, executive director of B Lab UK, said: “We are pleased to have B Corps of all shapes and sizes as part of our community –from startups to multinationals and across many different industries.

“Welcoming Lixir is an exciting moment because they have an opportunity to lead the way within the beverage industry. We and the rest of the B Corp community are really pleased to support Lixir in paving the way for a new way of doing things.”

The brand recently redesigned its packaging with a ‘sleek and modern’ new look, rolling out bottles featuring an embossed ‘X’ emblem for a more distinct ‘premium’ feel.

Last month, Diageo-owned liqueur Baileys and English gin producer Warner’s became B Corp businesses.
