Rockstar Spirits advocates for UK-Australia trade deal

Manchester-based Rockstar Spirits has partnered with the UK government to promote a new trade deal with Australia.

Rum producer Rockstar Spirits is promoting the UK-Australia trade deal in a new video

Announced last week, the trade agreement will axe tariffs on all UK goods, including a 5% tax on distilled spirits.

The Department of International Trade (DIT) selected Rockstar Spirits to star in a video advocating for the deal, available to view on DIT’s LinkedIn page.

The partnership follows the rum producer’s successful appearance on the hit BBC programme Dragons’ Den earlier this month. The business’ founder, Tom Hurst, secured a £25,000 (US$35,400) investment on the show to expand his brand into new markets, including Australia.

Hurst has already gained a listing with Australian retailer Woolworths Group, which will stock four Rockstar Spirits products across 240 of its Dan Murphy’s stores.

“This gives us an immediate footprint across the whole of Australia,” said Hurst. “We are already tendering to add new lines to the deal in 2022.”

Through the video, Hurst aims to ‘encourage others to export to Australia’.

“Whatever your view on Brexit, we now need to look at as many opportunities for new global trade deals as possible,” he said. “Australia was my first choice of export destination, as the reduction in tariffs and improved ease of movement will really help me to grow my business in this new market.

“I will be heading over to Australia for a couple of months as soon as the Covid-19 travel restrictions are lifted. If things go well, we may look to base ourselves in Australia for part of the year.

“The increase in freedom of movement will be really helpful to make this happen.”
