Dictador 1976 Lalique decanter sells for £30,000By Nicola Carruthers
A 1976 vintage Dictador in a Lalique decanter has become one of the most expensive bottles of rum sold at auction after fetching £30,000 (US$41,950) during a Sotheby’s sale.
The Dictador Generations En Lalique bottle was the highest value ever achieved for a rum during a Sotheby’s auction. The new bottling marks French glassmaker Lalique’s first collaboration with a rum brand.
The bottle, number 0 of 300 decanters, is a blend of vintage rums produced in 1976, and aged in American oak and Port casks. It was made by Dictador’s master blender Hernan Parra and his father Dario, marking the first time that the duo has worked on an expression together.
The bottling pays tribute to the Parra family, who have been distilling rum in Cartagena since 1913. The resulting liquid has notes of caramel, cocoa, roasted honey and coffee.
On the nose, the rum has hints of leather, ripe plums and clove, while the palate brings hints of dark chocolate, orange peel, clove spices, nutmeg, coffee, and star anise.
The decanter was designed by Lalique’s artistic and creative director Mark Larminaux. The bottle was inspired by the Caribbean sea, and incorporates water patterns, and Lalique’s signature clear and frosted crystal.
The rum comes in a ‘one-of-a-kind’ gift box, along with an illuminated presentation stand.
The lot that featured Dictador Generations En Lalique also included personal letters from Hernan and Larminaux, a print of the bottle’s original digital rendering signed by the designer; an invitation to Dictador Art Masters in Cartagena for two people; and a signed print by artist M-City, curator of Dictador Art Masters.
Proceeds from the sale of the lot will go to the Art Masters charity, which focuses on conservation of the Colombian jungle and the propagation of street art culture.
The limited edition decanter is available to buy from Hedonism Wines, priced at RRP £14,000 (US$19,565).
