What’s on this weekend

Mackmyra & friends

Every Friday at 6pm BST on Facebook Live, Swedish whisky brand Mackmyra hosts a 30-minute cocktail-making workshop, hosted by its UK brand ambassador, Kamil Csonka.

This evening (3 July), Csonka will look at two of Mackmyra’s seasonal whiskies and compare the summer and winter flavours. He will also demonstrate how to make two cocktails using the Appelblom (apple blossom) and Vinterglöd (winter glow) whiskies.

Mackmyra with food

The following day (4 July) will see Mackmyra host its weekly ‘Breakfast with B: Mackmyra whisky in food’ workshop on Facebook.

At 10am BST, chef Brendon McCallum will delve into the world of cooking, using the flavours of Mackmyra in food. McCallum, otherwise known as ‘B’, will focus on making desserts using Mackmyra’s Appelblom and Vinterglöd expressions. He will prepare classic desserts such as bread and butter pudding, as well as poached pears.

Buffalo Trace 5k

This weekend, Sazerac’s Buffalo Trace Distillery will hold its 19th annual Great Buffalo Chase 5k virtually to raise funds for charity.

The annual race will see participants running or walking in their hometowns and local neighbourhoods during the period of 3-5 July, instead of running at the distillery.

Buffalo Trace is encouraging participants to use the hashtag #chasethebuffalo on social media and dress in their best patriotic or Buffalo Trace attire for the run.

The Sazerac House

On 1 July, Sazerac reopened interactive cocktail museum The Sazerac House in New Orleans, US, to the public.

The Sazerac House will be open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 12pm to 6pm with timed ticketing allowing for eight guests every 20 minutes. All tours will be guided with a Sazerac House staff member, and sanitation of each space will take place between each group.

Sazerac also reopened its Kentucky distilleries Buffalo Trace and Barton 1792 to the public this week.

London’s Swift bar reopens

Award-winning cocktail bar Swift in London’s Soho will reopen tomorrow (4 July) as England’s on-trade venues are given the green light to start trading again as coronavirus lockdown measures are eased. The two-floor site will operate with physical distancing guidelines and will welcome four groups at a time with table service only.

Swift will also open its second London venue in late July, an all-day drinking destination in Shoreditch.

Mr Fogg’s reopens with free drinks for NHS

Also set to reopen tomorrow (4 July) is Mr Fogg’s Residence in Mayfair, London. It will be the first site operated by Inception Group to reopen.

To thank frontline workers, Inception Group is giving National Health Service (NHS) workers a free drink by showing their NHS identification badges at any of the group’s bars. NHS workers can claim a free drink every day until the £25,000 (US$30,780) amount has been reached.

Inception Group will be conducting temperature checks for staff, making hand sanitation dispensers available at key points throughout each venue, introducing a one-way system for entry and exit where possible and “rigorous” cleaning routines.

Glen Moray Digital Surgery

Next Tuesday (7 July) at 8pm BST, Speyside distillery Glen Moray will host the first event in its new digital series, Whisky Surgeries.

Hosted by Glen Moray’s head of whisky creation, Kirstie McCallum, the first event will explore unusual cask maturation. Viewers can take part in a virtual tasting and tour of Glen Moray’s Warehouse 1, home to the brand’s rare casks and maturation experiments.
