Gin bottles recalled after being filled with disinfectant
Australian producer Apollo Bay Distillery has recalled bottles of its SS Casino Dry Gin after one batch was filled with hand sanitiser and incorrectly labelled.
Apollo Bay Distillery’s gin range
According to a product recall notice from Apollo Bay Distillery yesterday (8 June), nine 700ml bottles of SS Casino Dry Gin purchased between 5-7 June were incorrectly labelled as gin and had no seal. Apollo Bay said the bottles can be identified by having no shrink wrap seal.
The bottles, which were sold at Tastes of the Region tasting room and bottle shop behind Great Ocean Road Brewhouse in Apollo Bay, Victoria, contain glycerol and hydrogen peroxide – ingredients used to make the disinfectant.
The producer said the bottles “are not toxic” and is asking customers to return their bottles to where they purchased them for a full refund or replacement.
In the notice, Apollo Bay warned that the product must not be consumed as it could cause side effects such as nausea, headaches, dizziness, bloating, vomiting, thirst and diarrhoea.
Apollo Bay began selling its Clean Skin Sanitiser in April, made with 80% ABV ethanol, glycerol, hydrogen peroxide and distilled water.
The producer joined a large number of distillers across the world in making the disinfectant during the pandemic.
