Spirits Master: Ableforth’s Bathtub Gin – Navy-Strength

England has spearheaded the gin renaissance, and unsurprisingly so when you look at the quality of award-winning expressions such as Ableforth’s Bathtub Gin – Navy-Strength.

Ableforth’s Bathtub Gin – Navy-Strength is produced by Atom Brands

In the third edition of our Spirits Masters series – articles celebrating some of the top scoring Master medallists from The Global Spirits Masters blind-tasting competitions – we profile Ableforth’s Bathtub Gin – Navy-Strength.

The Master accolade was awarded to the expression twice in The Gin Masters 2018 blind-tasting competition – a feat that no other gin achieved during the competition.

Last year’s Gin Masters saw an impressive number of medals awarded, with the count in 2018 four times what it was five years ago.

Storming to success in the navy strength and contemporary rounds, Ableforth’s Bathtub Gin – Navy-Strength was lauded for its “clove, liquorice and aniseed” character.

Contemporary proved to be one of the strongest rounds of the day, resulting in 11 Golds and 20 Silvers. One of two Masters in the flight, Ableforth’s Bathtub Gin – Navy-Strength was praised for its “delicious nose” and “oaky, vanilla” profile.

Produced by UK-based Atom Brands, the gin has a higher strength of 57% abv than the original Bathtub Gin at 43.3% abv.

It is first made with juniper, coriander and other fragrant botanicals. A portion of the gin is then infused with a further six botanicals – orange peel, cassia, juniper, coriander, cardamom and clove. For the navy strength variant, each botanical is cracked open before being added to the spirit to give the resulting liquid a “weighty botanical punch”.
