Glenturret honours cooper with single cask

Scotch whisky distillery Glenturret has released a 29-year-old single cask expression dedicated to retired cooper Michael Jamieson, who worked in the industry for 44 years.

Glenturret Jamieson’s Jigger Edition celebrates cooper Michael Jamieson’s 44-year career in Scotch

The Glenturret Jamieson’s Jigger Edition is limited to 170 bottles, and is said to offer nosing and tasting notes of cedarwood, eucalyptus, sweet vanilla, crème brûlée and nutmeg.

The repaired cask that was filled on 20 November 1987 would have passed through the Clyde Cooperage in Addiewell when Jamieson was working there.

Jamieson first joined the cooperage in 1971 aged 15, following in the footsteps of his father. He spent the last seven years of his 44-year career as a foreman cooper, overseeing 40,000 Sherry casks from Spain and 90,000 refill casks.

In addition, his responsibilities included crafting and repairing wooden washbacks at distilleries across Scotland, including the Douglas fir washbacks at Glenturret.

He also trained younger coopers and worked to keep the craft alive for the future.

He is now retired but continues to reside in Speyside.

The Glenturret Jamieson’s Jigger Edition

“I’m absolutely delighted and honoured to have been given this special dedication from Glenturret Distillery,” Jamieson said.

“I have fond memories of visiting Glenturret throughout my career and I have no doubt that the cask that this special whisky matured in would have once passed through the cooperage all those years ago.

“It’s a great industry to work in and I’ll definitely miss the banter but I’m looking forward to enjoying my retirement up in Speyside with a wee dram or two.”

Stuart Cassells, general manager at The Famous Grouse Experience, which is based at Glenturret Distillery, added: “The Glenturret Jamieson’s Jigger Edition is another very special, limited edition single cask of the very finest Glenturret malt. We’re delighted to dedicate it to a man who spent his working career maintaining the casks and hand-crafting our very special wooden washbacks which give our whisky its unique flavour.

“With 44-years in the whisky industry as a cooper and foreman, we were delighted to present Michael with bottle number 002 of this delicious 29-year old whisky and we wish him a most enjoyable retirement.”

170 bottles of The Glenturret Jamieson’s Jigger Edition are available from today [8 March] priced from £295-£395 (US$360-480).

Last year Glenturret released another limited edition 29-year-old cask strength expression, on this occasion to mark distillery manager Neil Cameron’s 20th year in his role.
