Wemyss brings gin distilling in house

Wemyss Malts has actioned a “major refresh” for its gin brand Darnley’s, unveiling plans for a new distillery, a name change, and the launch of a navy strength variant.

The company has introduced a navy strength expression to the Darnley’s Spiced Gin portfolio

The Edinburgh-based company launched the brand as Darnley’s View Gin in 2010. It has shortened the name to ‘Darnley’s Gin’ in anticipation of a “milestone year” for the brand, releasing new packaging decorated with hand-drawn illustrations of the liquid’s botanicals to accompany the change.

In addition, Wemyss Malts has revealed it is in the “final stages” of building Darnley’s Distillery in a disused cottage, which resides next to the company’s whisky distillery at Kingsbarns in the East Neuk of Fire.

There are plans to build a new visitor experience alongside to add to the food and drink tourism scene in Fife. The gin is currently distilled in London and will relocate to Scotland this summer.

William Wemyss, owner and managing director of the company, said: “We felt it was the right time to refresh Darnley’s Gin and also to bring production in house, more specifically, home to Fife, where the Wemyss family has lived and worked for centuries.

“Investing in the Darnley’s Gin portfolio and in being ‘made in Scotland’ is another bold step in our business story, which is driven by an ongoing passion for making the highest quality spirits for people to enjoy.”

At the same time, the company has introduced a navy strength expression to the Darnley’s Spiced Gin portfolio, inspired by the career of Sir Rosslyn Wemyss – a ancestor of the family, who commanded ships all over the world in the early 20th century.

“This is an incredibly exciting and significant time for Darnley’s Gin as we move into the next chapter of our brand story,” added brand manager Emma Hooper.
