By Nicola CarruthersBerry Bros & Rudd-owned Scotch whisky brand The Glenrothes has launched a second edition of its Vintage 1988, following the success of its first release in 2009.
The Glenrothes Vintage 1988, 2nd Edition is aged in first fill American Sherry hogshead and refill Sherry butts
The Glenrothes Vintage 1988 2nd Edition is aged in a mixture of first fill American Sherry hogshead and refill Sherry butts.
Bottled at 44.1% abv – higher in strength than the first edition – it is said to give it “greater intensity and a richer character”.
On the nose, it is described as “nutmeg, fruit cake, nuts and dark honey”, with “full, lingering dried fruits and spice” on the finish.
The first edition of the 1988 vintage was released in 2009, when John Ramsay, the malt master at the time, selected the casks that were at their best.
The second edition was released as Ramsay believed that some of the whisky needed more time in cask.
The Glenrothes’ current malt master Gordon Motion describes the whisky as having notes of “blackcurrants, nutmeg, fruit cake and mixed peel”.
The Glenrothes Vintage 1988 2nd Edition is available from Berry Bros & Rudd at £375 and internationally at €359, US$500 and NT$8,500.
