Suntory Holdings has revealed details of a two-day employee “health camp” programme, which offered educational sessions on diet, exercise and drinking in moderation.

Suntory has revealed details of its employee “health camp” programme

The purpose of the camp was to “learn how to improve daily diet and maintain a healthy lifestyle”, according to a spokesperson from Suntory, who added that weight-loss was “just one consequence, not the goal”.

The programme – which launched in October 2016, with sessions in Osaka and Tokyo – covered healthy food choices, drinking alcohol in moderation, how to warm-up and exercise, how to prevent lifestyle diseases, a physical fitness test, and setting future goals.

The course was available to employees with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 28 or over and those free from existing ‘lifestyle disease’ conditions.

The spokesperson added that heart disease, stroke and diabetes candidates for the course were not selected by “indicators for metabolic syndrome”. Metabolic syndrome is a combination of diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity which together increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes, according to the NHS website.

Of approximately 300 candidates – equivalent to approximately 5% of all employees – around 30 employees participated.

Daisuke Sen, head of personnel, Suntory, said: “The three important factors of this programme were participant mindset, practical course menus and half-year post-programme support.

“We believe the fusion of all three of these aspects into one process resulted in the participants’ high reputation.”

According to a post-camp survey, approximately 90% of the participants were either ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with the programme.

Sen added that he plans to further update the programme for 2017.
