Halewood plans distillery in Wales
UK drinks producer Halewood International has submitted a planning application to open the “first” whisky-producing distillery in north Wales for more than 100 years.
Halewood’s portfolio includes West Cork Malt Irish Whiskey, The Pogues Irish Whiskey and Liverpool Rum
The Liverpool-based drinks firm submitted the proposal to Gwynedd council on 22 December, detailing plans to build on the site of Aber Depot in Abergwyngregyn.
Halewood hopes to convert the 6,000 square foot warehouse to a distillery for the “production of Welsh whiskey, gin and other alcoholic drinks”.
If approved, the new distillery will also include a visitor centre and offer training courses in distilling spirits.
Halewood said the project will create more jobs in the area and also put the region on the spirits map.
Halewood’s current portfolio includes West Cork Malt Irish Whiskey, The Pogues Irish Whiskey and Red Square Vodka.
Halewood International acquired a number of spirit brands earlier this year, including Liverpool Gin, Liverpool Rum and a 50% stake in The Pogues Irish Whiskey.
If approved, the new site will join Welsh distilleries Dà Mhìle and Pendyryn – which is set to open its second distillery in Swansea.
