Moray Distillery unveils Avva Scottish Gin
By Nicola CarruthersElgin-based Moray Distillery has made its first foray into spirits with the launch of Avva Scottish Gin, a London dry gin.
Avva Scottish Gin is made with hand-foraged botanicals from Highland and SpeysideThe new gin is described as “well-balanced with a clean finish” and made with traditional botanicals combined with hand-foraged botanicals from Highland and Speyside.
Avva Scottish Gin is made with using a Speyside copper still called Jessie-Jean, named after the founder’s grandmothers. The name Avva also means ‘a respected grandmother, respectable elder woman’ in the Indian language of Dravidian, in Hebrew.
The new expression is presented in a traditional apothecary-style bottle and finished with a wooden topped cork, which is de-embossed with a rose window.
Moray Distillery was founded by Jill Brown in 2015, who previously established liqueur business Berry Good.
Brown said: “The previous experience I have with compounding spirits for liqueur production most definitely helped establish recipes for Avva Scottish Gin.
“The distillation process was where I wanted to go with the business and I appreciate the importance of utilising local suppliers, which is why I chose for the still to be made in Moray. Not many distillers or distilleries were able to just pop over the road to see it all coming together. A Scottish still for a Scottish gin seems fitting.”
The first batch is available now direct to consumers via the online shop at £38 for a 70cl bottle.
