Prohibition Whiskey Island on sale for $3m

A private island once used to transport bootleg whiskey to New York during Prohibition is on sale for US$3 million (£2million).

Whiskey Island was used to smuggle illicit alcohol into New York during Prohibition

Whiskey Island, as the piece of land is aptly named, boasts 3.1 acres of land and an eight-bedroom red painted lodge – complete with a library/study and numerous covered porches – that dates back to around 1875.

In addition, a second smaller two-bedroom cottage has also been built on Whiskey Island as well as a two-slip boathouse.

The isle is located at the southwestern end of the Thousand Islands at the head of Grindstone Island along the northern edge of upstate New York and minutes from the Canadian border.

Whiskey Island is listed for sale on Vladi Private Islands, which said: “Panoramic river vistas, privacy and a superior harbour make Whiskey Island a rare opportunity for the purchase of island property.”

Prohibition was enforced in the US from 1920 to 1933 and banned all production, importation, exportation and sale of alcohol throughout the country.
