Entrepreneur launches ‘satirical’ Grexit vodka drink
By Annie HayesA German entrepreneur is readying to release a lemon-flavoured vodka drink named Grexit ahead of Greece’s eurozone referendum.
A ‘no’ vote in the referendum has come to be known as the “Grexit”, inspiring German entrepreneur Uwe Dahlhoff to trademark the word.
He plans to launch a vodka-based alcoholic beverage in its name for an RRP of approximately €0.59, inspired by Greece’s economic crisis.
The label shows Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras and finance minister Yanis Varoufakis toasting underneath a European Union flag, with Angela Merkel’s face surrounded by a circle of stars, and features the tag line “sauer macht lustig” – roughly translated to imply “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”.
“Some people are satirizing the situation in pint and on TV. “I’m doing it on a bottle. Lots of people understand that it is supposed to be satirical,” Dahlhoff told Global Post.
“Naturally there are people who can’t take a joke.”
Earlier this year, a cocktail bar in Belarus outraged patrons by adding a “Holocaust” cocktail to its menu.
