Macallan auction exceeds estimate by $100k

The world’s largest collection of The Macallan Fine and Rare range has sold at auction, smashing its presale estimate by more than US$100,000.

Zachys auction house has sold the world’s largest collection of The Macallan Fine and Rare for US$430,000

The collection, which was estimated to fetch US$325,000, was sold for US$430,000 at Zachys auction in New York last week, setting a new world record for the largest collection of The Macallan Fine and Rare ever sold.

A bottle of The Macallan 50 Year Old in Lalique sold for US$49,000 against a pre-sale estimate of US$24,000 to US$40,000.

Other lots included in Zachys’ auction, included 50-year-old Scotch whiskies from the Bowmore, Glenfiddich and The Dalmore distilleries.

World class collections and record-breaking sales were the hallmarks of Zachys’ first New York auction of the Fall season,” said Jamie Pollack, managing director for Zachys North America.

“The Macallan Fine and Rare selection was one unlike the world has ever seen and brought in a packed house with frenzied phone bidding and record setting prices. This is a stellar start to Zachys’ Fall calendar.”

In May this year, Glasgow-based McTear’s Auctioneers held a sale of what was thought to be one of the world’s largest collections of The Macallan Scotch whisky, valued at £100,000.
