One of the largest Macallan collections to auction

One of the world’s largest collections of The Macallan Scotch whisky, valued at about £100,000, will head to auction in Glasgow next week.

One of the world’s largest collections of The Macallan whisky will go under the hammer at a Glasgow auction next week

An Italian restaurateur accumulated the collection of 164 bottles over a period of 50 years.

Amongst the lots, which will be offered through McTear’s Auctioneers, is a bottle of The Macallan 1938, which could fetch £4,000, and a rare expression bottled exclusively for Raffles Hotel in Singapore, which could fetch £1,000-£2,000.

Other highlights include a selection of 80-proof Campbell, Hope & King Macallans from the 1950s and 60s, with prices ranging from £600 to £3,500.

“This is a quite stunning collection,” said McTear’s whisky specialist Stephen McGinty. “The owner had a café in San Casciano, Tuscany and over a period of 50 years he gradually acquired bottle after bottle for his restaurant.”

He added that the Italian collector was given his first bottle of The Macallan by his father after the Second World War, sparking his interest in the Highland distillery.

“Although we are focusing on The Macallan whiskies in this sale, the full collection amounts to some 400 bottles, all of which will be put up for auction over the coming months,” said McGinty.

McTear’s Rare and Collectable Whisky, Wine and Port auction will take place on Wednesday 14 May.
