By Amy HopkinsMore than 50 people have been killed in Kenya after drinking illegal alcohol while dozens more were hospitalized and several went blind.
At least 50 people have died in Kenya after drinking illegal spiritsAccording to Reuters, the victims hailed from the eastern and central counties of Embu, Kitui and Kiambu and are likely to have ingested spirits from a single batch laced with industrial chemicals.
The number of fatalities reported varies across local press, though it is thought 11 people have died in Kiambu and at least 24 people have died in Embu.
This recent spate of toxic alcohol-related fatalities in Kenya follows the deaths of 45 people who drank methanol-laced spirits in June 2005.
Five years earlier, around 130 people died from a poisonous homemade batch of spirits in Nairobi.
It was also reported in October last year that bootlegged alcohol had killed 42 people in Northern India and left more than 50 in critical condition.
Illicit alcohol is often spiked with chemicals such as methanol to increase potency.
