Plymouth Gin Distillery nominated as iconic landmark
Plymouth Gin Distillery has been nominated for an award as an iconic English landmark as part of a new tourism campaign.
Plymouth Gin Distillery is the oldest operating gin distillery in England
The Plymouth landmark, thought to be England’s oldest working gin distillery dating back to the 13th century, has been nominated in the Food and Drink category of the Visit England Hall of Fame campaign.
The distillery, owned by Chivas Brothers, is up against nine other shortlisted entries in its category, including Earl Grey tea, Cornish pasties and Yorkshire pudding.
Plymouth Distillery produces the only English gin with a geographical indication (GI).
The British public are able to vote for their favourite entry (up until 6 April), which will go on display at a pop-up exhibition on London’s Southbank running from St. George’s Day (23 April) to 30 April.
The other categories, each with 10 shortlisted finalists battling for a place in the Hall of Fame, include The Great, The Good & The Notorious; History & Heritage; Culture & Entertainment; Inventions & Discoveries; and Sport & Leisure.
