Master of Malt launches first educational whiskies

Master of Malt has released the first collection of educational blended malt Scotch whiskies called the Reference Series.

Reference Series is the first range of educational blended malt Scotch whiskies

The three expressions have been designed to enable novice drinkers to learn about whisky production techniques while tasting a “superb” Scotch to make for a more enjoyable learning process.

Reference Series comprises three blended whiskies, I, II and III, which increase with age, rarity and character to show consumers the progression of flavour profile that comes with the ageing process.

The names refer to the notion that consumers can taste later editions then refer back to the original I, II and III for comparison.

The collection launched with whiskies made with four ingredients undisclosed ingredients titled A, B, C and D: A – a youthful vibrant blended malt, B – an older, more complex, spicy blended malt, C – an old single malt, and D – an extremely old single malt.

Bottled at 47.5% abv, Reference Series I carried an RRP of £36.95 per 500ml bottle and is made from 83% A, 9% B, 4% C and 4% D. It is described as dry and subtle with bread and herbal notes plus a little dry vermouth.

Reference Series II is bottled also at 47.5% abv with an RRP of £53.95 per 500ml bottle and comprises 67% A, 13% B, 10% C and 10% D. This is described as offering flavours of rich oak, chocolate and creamy black forest gâteau.

The last in the series, Reference Series III, is bottled at 47.5% abv and has an RRP of £105.95. It is a blend of 35.9% A, 9.7% B, 16.5% C and 35% D. It is described as thick with loads of chocolate covered dates and raisins, coffee cake and touch of mint on the finish.

Reference Series is now available online at www.masterofmalt.com.
