Bowmore and Macallan fetch £46k at Bonhams
Rare selections of Bowmore and The Macallan whiskies fetched over £46,000 when they went under the hammer at a Bonhams auction yesterday.
Bottles of The Macallan and Bowmore whiskies have been deemed the “stars” of a recent Bonhams auction
As part of Bonhams’ whisky sales, which took place in Edinburgh, a collection of three “exceptional” Bowmore whiskies made £16,500, against a £12,000-£15,000 estimate.
The collection consisted of a Black Bowmore 42 Year Old, a White Bowmore 43 Year Old, and a Gold Bowmore.
A bottle of The Macallan 55 Year Old contained in a Lalique crystal decanter sold for £12,500 against a £12,000-£15,000 estimate. This decanter was number 220 out of 440 that were made available worldwide.
The auction also saw the sale of a bottle of The Macallan Select Reserve 52 Year Old from 1946 for £6,25 against an estimate of £5,000-£6000.
Two bottles of The Macallan 1938 which were estimated to fetch £4,000-£5,000 were both sold for £5,625.
Bonhams whisky specialist, Martin Green, said: “The Bowmores were a special and unusual combination of very desirable bottles so it is no surprise to see them doing well.
“The Macallan is highly sought after and seven of the top 10 bottles came from this famous Highland Distillery including, of course, the celebrated The Macalllan-55 year old.”
It was revealed earlier this month that a “rarest of the rare” Cognac would be going under the hammer at New York’s Bonhams in April.
