The Macallan Amber named Whisky of the Year

The Macallan Amber has been crowned Whisky of the Year 2013 by spirits retailer The Whisky Shop.

Following consultation with customers and store managers, The Whisky Shop has named The Macallan Amber as its Whisky of the Year 2013

Part of the new 1824 Series, the single malt was selected from The Whisky Shop’s range of over 300 whiskies based on a combination of customer choice, sales and recommendations from store managers.

“Although it was only launched earlier this year, The Macallan Amber has already established itself as one of our leading single malts,” said Andrew Torrence, managing director of The Whisky Shop.

“Our Whisky of the Year is voted for by our customers as well as our knowledgeable store managers, which underlines the impact of this new addition to The Macallan range and The Macallan Amber is a highly deserving winner of our award.”

The Macallan Amber, priced at £44.99, is said to carry notes of flowers, citrus, vanilla and cinnamon on the nose, and apples, lemons, ginger and oak on the palate.

It is part of The Macallan 1824 Series, said to “showcase the brand’s greatest strengths” – oak Sherry casks and natural colour – which also consists of Gold, Sienna and Ruby expressions, as well as the recently launched The Macallan M, a no-age-statement whisky bottled in Lalique crystal.

Ken Grier, director of malts for brand-owners Edrington, said: “We are delighted top receive this award for The Macallan Amber. This recognition is testimony both to [our] innovative approach to whisky-making of taking colour as the basis for shaping these whiskies, and to the long experience of our whisky maker, Bob Dalgarno.

“As some 60% of the aroma and flavour of The Macallan derives from the oak maturation casks, Amber truly demonstrates the critical role of our exceptional casks.”

Previous winners of the award, now in its seventh year, are Jura Superstition, Dalmore 12 Year Old, Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Auchentoshan 12 Year Old, Bowmore 12 Year Old, and Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old.

The Whisky Shop, which has over three million customers each year, announced earlier this year that a new flagship store would be opening in Manchester.
