The Black Duke opens in London’s Brunswick House

Brunswick House in Vauxhall is now home to The Black Duke, a subterranean cocktail bar in the Grade-II-listed Georgian mansion’s former cellars.

Black Duke
Brunswick House’s history dates to the mid-17th century

The Black Duke, situated in Brunswick House’s old vaulted-stone cellars, offers a menu of cocktails, wine and bar snacks.

The space has undergone extensive refurbishment work, including a 300-year-old fireplace that has been cleaned and relined. The woodpiles have also been restocked and are ready to be used again.

The bar is named after the Duke of Brunswick, who once resided in the house. The Duke lost his life at the Battle of Quatre Bras in 1815, on the eve of Waterloo. His portrait can be found above the hearth.

The interior also features vintage leather seating and tables, as well as a bespoke stainless steel cocktail bar and a new sound system.

The cocktail menu is divided into four sections

The cocktail list is split between four sections: fizzy, still, shaken and non-alcoholic. Signatures include the Champagne Cocktail, made with Pol Roger Brut Reserve, brown butter Armagnac and kokuto sugar, and the Brunswick Martini, which features No.3 London Gin, vermouth, alpine liqueur génépi and hay.

The bar’s twist on a Margarita is made with Tequila, dry curaçao, lime and bergamot. Meanwhile, in the non-alc section, the Botivo Daisy comprises Botivo, figs and citrus.

The drinks can be paired with bar snacks such as the Brunswick Bikini toastie, made with Wiltshire ham and Keen’s Cheddar.

Brunswick House is also home to chef Jackson Boxer’s restaurant of the same name.

The Black Duke is open from 6pm to 11pm, Tuesday to Friday. Guests can enter through the Brunswick House reception and follow the steps down past the ground-floor bar.
