Updated atlas lists 1,422 European whisky distilleries
Alba Collection, a publisher of whisky maps, has released an updated version of The Whisk(e)y Atlas Europe, which now includes 1,422 distilleries.
The 136-page book, compiled by RJ Hirst, presents detailed whisky distillery maps and facts about various European countries, from Scotland and Ireland to Germany and beyond.
Building on an atlas published in 2023, the book features 340 new whisky distilleries, increasing the total from 1,082 active distilleries in 2023 to 1,422 distilleries by 2025.
The atlas features 46 regional maps, six overview maps, and two graphics that aid in orientation and visualise the success story of whisky throughout Europe.
The updated version includes ‘brewstilleries’ – breweries that produce whisky – alongside traditional distilleries.
Additionally, the atlas provides information on the locations of major maltings, cooperages, bonded warehouses, and bottling plants in Scotland. For even more detailed insights, it highlights which Scottish distilleries malt some of their own grains.
In addition to the active distilleries, the atlas displays around 100 planned or under-construction whisky distilleries, as well as approximately 800 distilleries that have closed.
Offered as a hardcover, The Whisk(e)y Atlas Europe 2025 is now available directly from the Alba Collection website for €49 (US$58), excluding shipping costs. It can also be found in select whisky shops and bookshops.
Alba Collection offers a whisky map app for Apple devices, which will soon be available for Android.
