Situated at 1400 West Broadway, the 60,000-square-foot Mission-style landmark was designed by architect Arthur Loomis and opened in 1908 as Bond Bread.

The vacant building, adorned with four gargoyles on its east tower, was acquired by the whiskey producer to be transformed into The Von Payne Castle Distillery and Tasting Experience.

Von Payne is planning to restore the old Whiteside Bakery Company building and transform it into a unique destination on the Bourbon Trail.

The facility will feature Von Payne’s signature offerings, including its Bourbon and blackcurrant-infused whiskey. Additionally, the building will be used to host immersive events that showcase the brand’s ‘darker, alternative edge’ in the spirits world.

Craig Greenberg, mayor of Louisville, said: “We’re excited to welcome Von Payne Spirits as they create a new life for a Louisville landmark and bring new jobs and investment to our community.

“This is another sign of Louisville’s amazing economic momentum, and it will be the perfect addition to the world-class experiences that make our city so vibrant.”

The restoration of the site and the finished distillery will bring new job opportunities and investment into Louisville’s West End.

Steven Allen, founder of Von Payne Spirits, expressed his enthusiasm: “We are excited to bring the Von Payne experience to Louisville and join the many other successful spirits companies on the Bourbon Trail.

“We’re not just bringing another Bourbon to Kentucky – we’re bringing something different. An experience that, as we like to say, expands the possibilities of the night.”

Von Payne Spirits was founded in 2021 and is known for its gothic design and gargoyle pour spout.

Last month, the brand partnered with the Coyote Ugly Saloon in the UK to host Halloween and Ozzy Osbourne-inspired events.
